"Our task, regarding creativity, is to help children climb their own mountains,
as high as possible"
- Loris Malaguzzi
Learning social skills is an important phase in early childhood development. We believe that Music, a daily part of our program, is a tool that promotes social skills and self-esteem. For example, with our singing games, a shy child connects with other kids thus furthering social interaction. We incorporate creative activities that encourage character development and self-regulation skills. Children have opportunities for play indoors and outdoors. They learn to listen, take turns, respect, cooperate, and make decisions. Every child is an important part of our daily morning "family meeting" to plan and talk about our day.
Reggio Emilia inspired
An exemplary model in childhood education, the Reggio Emilia approach focuses on the child as an active and competent participant in his or her own learning. Teachers at Piccolo Nido are active co-learners who listen, observe, and learn from the children. We use creative arts as a medium to help children express their ideas or develop child-initiated projects. This fosters teamwork, creativity, and in-depth study of children's own ideas and interests.
Visual expression is an important step to personal development and learning. It builds confidence and enhances creativity. At Piccolo, preschool children explore various safe media like clay, paint, paper, found objects, home made materials. Guided by our talented teachers, children discover visual arts in its bi-dimensional and 3D forms. Visual art is such an amazing medium for children's communication, self-expression, and self-awareness.
Music and Movement
At Piccolo, we believe that music enhances children’s quality of life. Thus, we offer daily music classes! We provide children with many experiences in performing arts-- through songs, instrumental playing, drama, games, dance, speech, and play. We use music during age-appropriate lessons in math, science, social studies, and various subject areas. Our music room is equipped with a baby grand piano and quality instruments that support children's music exploration. Our music program draw upon the work of Kodaly and Orff. We utilize a rich repertoire of traditional, folk literature, and contemporary materials.
Reading and Language
Preschool is a critical time for language development. Piccolo Nido offers activities that promote children's oral and written language and strategies that pave the way for reading acquisition. Research confirms that reading is a strong predictor of a child's later academic success. We utilize developmentally appropriate, fun, and easy phonics and handwriting programs. We have games and activities that enhance a child's language skills. We have daily read-aloud times where kids are exposed to age-appropriate materials.
